I was at a blogging conference (BAMC16) last week and met two incredible ladies, over 50 and CrossFit! I’m not sure how I found out that they did CrossFit but when I did, I knew I had to talk to them. They were inspiring, healthy, and happy, and it showed.
No matter what your age is you need to strength train. But over 50, it is even more important for strong bones, muscles, and mind. I bet you can ask anyone over 50 how feeling fit changes their lives and they will have a motivating story to tell you.
I have been weight training for 20 plus years. I will never stop! I competed at the age of 50 in a fitness competition and got 3rd place in my age group (over 40). It was not easy! I had put on a little too much body fat but I knew that I could lose it at any age. You cannot use age as an excuse; it just gets “a lot“ harder to get it off which means you have to work harder. My goal is when I am in my 70’s to be able to go to the garden store and get my four 50 pound bags of bird seed like I do now. When they ask me if I want help, I will tell them “no thank you”, this is part of my exercise program.
So check out the video I did with Cathy and Candace and be prepared to get motivated! Sorry about the noise I wasn’t planning doing a video and did not take my mic.
Check out their websites Cathy at My side of 50, and Candace at Candace Karu.
Many of our clients at Elite Physiques are in their 50’s 60’s and 70’s. They workout hard and not much different than our clients that are younger. We might incorporate a little more balance work but that’s about it.
You might have heard that over a certain age you need to slow down “take it easy”. This is NOT a good way to stay healthy and fit. Listen to your body, but get out there and have fun. Don’t ever stop or you will have more aches and pain than ever before. Just make sure you get a physical and your doctor’s OK.
Stay young!

Sherry, I love this! It turned out great. So glad we found each other at BAM! Will be sharing!
Thank you, Cathy! I just added your websites to the post. Let’s stay in touch.
Great post, Sherry! So inspiring to see and hear Cathy and Candace’s enthusiasm, and to learn about the impact that CrossFit has had on their lives. Now I feel like a total slug. But inspired, nonetheless!
So glad you are inspired! It’s never to late to start something to make you healthier, stronger, and happier. Thanks for reading!
It’s great to see you in action! I agree that it’s important to exercise and weight train. I work out with a trainer and I also just got some resistance bands. Thanks for sharing what works for you.
Hi Estelle, keep up the good work! Working out with a trainer does motivate you and keeps the workouts interesting. Thanks for reading!
Great post Sherry and I certainly agree about exercise and weight training especially as we age. I love seeing women in midlife working out and looking after their bodies to keep fit and active.
Thank you, Sue. I wish more over 50 women would feel the same. If they only knew!
